Program/Intervention Description

What: It is an educational and therapeutic approach for the prevention and treatment of PTSD. Provided a seven step sequence of skills designed to enable the client to understand and gain control of trauma-related actions triggered by current daily life stresses. Helps clients recognize their personal strengths using the seven steps and to use these skills consistently and purposefully when they experience stress reactions in their current lives. How: TARGET teaches a seven-step sequence of skills, the FREEDOM Steps, designed to enable participants to recognize, understand, and gain control of stress reactions by enhancing their strengths/abilities for mental focusing, mindfulness, emotion regulation, executive function, and interpersonal engagement/interaction. TARGET provides a manualized protocol for brief (4-session), time-limited (10-14 sessions), and extended (26+ sessions) individual, group, or couple/family education and therapy. TARGET can be delivered in community, outpatient, inpatient, residential treatment, shelter, workplace, correctional, or healthcare settings.

Program Goals/Outcomes

TARGET teaches skills for processing and managing trauma-related reactions to stressful situations, such as PTSD symptoms, traumatic grief, survivor guilt, and shame. The goal of treatment is to help individuals regulate intense emotions and gain control of posttraumatic stress reactions.
